Former Aviation Minister Femi Fani-Kayode has cautioned President Buhari-led administration against “plot to arrest or detain” self-acclaimed Yoruba activist Sunday Igboho.

Fani-Kayode gave the warning today, in an open letter to the Buhari government, after Sunday Igboho rejected the invitation sent to him from the office of Inspector General of Police.

The invitation came, on Ist of April, few weeks after Sunday Igboho declared the ‘Yoruba Nation’, claiming that South-Western states are no longer a part of Nigeria.

However, Fani-Kayode noted that Igboho’s agitation for the Oduduwa Republic should not warrant any plot to arrest, detain or eliminate him.

The ex-minister warned that such a move from the Federal Government will be the biggest threat to the peace and stability of Nigeria.

Read Fani-Kayode’s full statement below:

I will say this just once. The biggest threat to the peace & stability of Nigeria today is the plan by some hardliners in the Buhari regime to kill, arrest or detain my friend and brother Chief Sunday Adeyemo (aka Sunday Igboho).

Arresting, detaining or killing this man will be the biggest mistake that the Buhari Govt. can make. I say this because firstly, as far as I am aware, he has not broken any law and secondly because he represents the thoughts and aspirations of over 70 million Yoruba people.

To every single one of those people he is the greatest hero of the SW since Oduduwa. Equally relevant is the fact that he has made a pledge to keep the peace and has honored that pledge and commitment by participating and playing a key role in the biggest post-war peace deal in Nigerian history in which he single-handedly guaranteed the safety of innocent Hausa Fulani’s in the South West and even offered to protect and receive them after the food embargo on the South was lifted and when the Northern food suppliers refused to come South.

Without Igboho’s guarantee of safety for the northerners, the embargo would never have been lifted and a major conflict would have ensued.

I know because, together with Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi state and others, I was deeply involved in the negotiations. There was also a plan to attack Southerners in the North (which would have resulted in a massive retaliation in the South) by a powerful, well organised Northern group but this was dropped after Igboho gave his guarantee and committed to peace with those that come in peace and live in peace in Yorubaland.

This man SAVED both northern & southern lives by this single action and has refused to join others in attacking innocent Hausa Fulanis in the South West. Instead, he has focused on defending the Yoruba people and protecting them against the homicidal and violent Fulani terrorists that are launching daily attacks against them from the forests of the West.

For this, he is loved and revered by our people and neither will any self-respecting Yoruba person offer an apology. This is a matter of self-defense and Igboho has consistently carried out these heroic operations in conjunction and collaboration with the local law enforcement agencies.

That is why millions love and admire him: he has done what the FG has failed to do and provided security for our people. To kill or arrest such a man who has committed no crime and who millions all over the SW love and would gladly die for is a dangerous, reckless and self-destructive course to take.

And neither should his belief in the establishment of an Oduduwa Republic attract such aggression because he is simply reflecting the views and voicing the aspirations of millions of Yoruba people.

If the FG has an issue with Sunday Igboho my counsel and advice is to dialogue with him and attempt to build bridges of peace and understanding rather than attempt to arrest or kill him or wage war against him. He is not a murderer or a terrorist and neither has he breached any law or committed any offence.

All he has sought and fought for is peace and security and the protection of his people against foreign invaders and killers who have occupied our land and who the Federal Government has been unable or unwilling to uproot and eradicate.

Those identifiable individuals from the SW that are jealous of Igboho’s rising profile and that have urged the Federal Government to kill or arrest him are the real enemies of the Buhari administration. They are also the enemies of the people of the South West and Nigeria.

Arresting or killing Igboho will not help these people achieve their political objectives and aspirations. It will only make it impossible for them to do so and attract unprecedented hostility, opprobrium and notoriety to them. Treachery and betrayal come with a heavy price. If anyone doubts that they should find out how Judas Iscariot ended.

Peaceful co-existence with those we may not like or agree with is the only option we have as a people if we do not want another civil war. Building bridges of peace & fraternity even with those we may be opposed to is the best way forward if we wish to avoid an armed conflict.

The greatest threat to our peace is for anyone to believe that the arrest or elimination of Igboho will not have serious consequences.

This would be a grave miscalculation on the part of those who are contemplating it and would lead us down the road of turmoil, conflict, chaos and mutually assured destruction.

I pray that good sense prevails and that we avoid that road.

  1. Why can’t the IGP invite the leader of Boko Haram, banditry leaders , fulani herdsmen etc and leave our brother Sunday igboho alone .

  2. Sunday Igboho is our man. You don’t know the number of his admirers and lovers. If anything evil happened to our man, something terrible than what the Fulani’s have displayed with their A k 47 would be a child’s play. Get it clear that it is those people that have been in government one time or the other up till now that have slolen so much money from this country that still want Nigeria. The majority of the remainder did not want Nigeria again. There is no Love, no Trust, no Security, no water, no light, no food, no good government etc etc. Nigeria has expired, that is the truth and whether you like it or not, the truth shall prevail.

  3. Fani Kayode has spoken words of wisdom, he is truly a statesman, a nationalist and a highly detribalized, smart Nigerian.

The greatest problem Nigeria ever faced is having a tribal leaning and clueless Buhari as the President of Nigeria.

Arresting Sunday Igboho will only attract more followers to him and ultimately make his vision for Oduduwa nation an attractive propositions to millions of South westerners.

Unfortunately Buhari and his fellow fulani power drunks are not students of history, they have not learnt anything from mishandling of Nnamdi Kanu and his IPOB agitation.

With the worsening security challenges in the south east today, it would amount to total madness for the government to mis manage Sunday Igboho and his aspirations.

What a bad government and it’s attachments and prejudices. What a country. There was a country What a failed regime.

What a situation. I take a stroll. Nonsense.

  4. Let them try it and they will see the consequences. F**K the IGP’s invitation. We have an uneducated fool as a President and a worthless clown as the IGP. Both of you will regret it if anything happens to Igboho.

  5. Inviting him does not mean arrest. Why the noise about his invitation?
Any citizen of this country can be invited by police.
And any citizen that refuses invitation, should forcefully arrested and he still has court to defend himself.
No need killing and m sure Buhari is not even a killer.

    • Trash talk. Invitation for what? Let the illiterate IGP come and talk to Igboho in his house. These Fulanis are playing with fire. If anything happens to Igboho, the country will divide. Think before you clowns move ahead with your stupid plans.

  6. PMB administration lacks the courage to call spade its name. Fulani’s have being going about and the cry of Southerners have reached heavens but PMB pretended as if nothing is happening or that he was not hearing it.

He body language siding the killers of Southerners resulted to the attempted self help or self defense by the neglected Southerners, why the noise.

PMB should wake up from slumber and fight Boko Haram, Kidnappers, Banditry, and do away with those evils round about him.

    Buhari, please watch your back.
