President Buhari: his govt approves N2.23 billion for a km of road

By Abankula

The Buhari administration has sparked outrage in the land after approving a somewhat scandalous N797.23 billion for the rebuilding of Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano road.

The road which is 357 km long will cost N2.23 billion per kilometre. It was initially awarded last year at N155 billion to Julius Berger.

Kabir Abubakar, Chairman of the House of Reps Committee on Works, said it was inflated by over N60billion.

Some companies at the time had quoted N90 billion for the same job, he said.

But in a revision of the scope of the contract, Minister of Works Raji Fashola said the cost has been jacked up to N797.23 billion, more than four times the initial cost.

Fashola announced the approval of the Federal Executive Council 4 March.

“I presented on behalf of the Ministry of Works and Housing, one memorandum and one report. The memo was with respect to the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano highway, which was to change the scope of works form rehabilitation previously awarded because many parts of the pavement had deteriorated, to full reconstruction of two lanes on both sides.

“The council considered and approve the request for that change of scope and the incidental cost consequence; changing the existing contract from N155 billion to N797.236 billion to provide for full reconstruction of the main carriageway, trailer parks, way bridges, toll stations and additional side lanes in the built-up areas across the FCT, Niger Kaduna and Kano Sates, which are all served by the road and this was approved by council for the same contractor,” he said.

The opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has reacted, alleging that the cost has been padded.

The party accused the Buhari-led Federal Executive Council of egregious corruption.

National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, said that the approval of the outrageous cost “speaks volumes of the level of profligacy and corruption inherent in the administration”.

He said the ruling party wants Nigerians to believe that “it is spending N12.12 billion ($5.58 million) per kilometer of road”.

He described it as the “height of corruption, recklessness and insult to the sensibilities of Nigerians”.

The PDP however got its Maths muddled up. The cost of a kilometre is N2.23billion, which is also high, for an existing road, according to experts.

The full statement: The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has raised the alarm over the manifest padding of the cost for the reconstruction of the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano road at an outrageous N797.23 billion, a project racket which has again exposed the multifaceted corruption in the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration.

The party asserts that the approval of a scandalous N797.23 billion ($2.09bn) by the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Executive Council (FEC) for the 375 kilometer road, speaks volumes of the level of profligacy and corruption inherent in the administration.

While the PDP has nothing against any genuine effort towards infrastructural development in our country and particularly the reconstruction of the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano road, our party, and indeed, all well-meaning Nigerians, reject this clear attempt by the APC administration to hide under this desirable project to fleece our nation.

Our party invites Nigerians to note that by awarding the reconstruction of the 375 kilometer road for N797 billion, the APC Federal Government wants the nation to believe that it is spending N12.12 billion ($5.58 million) per kilometer of road.

The PDP holds that this is the height of corruption, recklessness and insult to the sensibilities of Nigerians.

Nigerians can now see how the APC-led administration has been awarding projects at over- bloated costs, bulk of which are diverted to private purses of APC leaders and the cabal, making our roads the most expensive in Africa.

  1. This is corruption. It is shocking for the government to approve a road contract at 2.23 billion Naira per kilometre. To construct one kilometre of four lanes should not be more than 500 million. This government has damaged the entire system of the country. Let the federal government give me the entire road contact for 900 million per kilometre. I cry for my be loved country!

  2. Buhari ought to have been stopped from the moment he started planting fulani men and women into almost all key offices. That was the sign that monumental corruption was brewing; just like the situation in the EFCC, how can we have Malami and Bawa come from the same Kebbi State, Malami to supervise Bawa.

  3. This paper and PDP are just a stupid bunch of idiots. The original approval was for rehabilitation and now full reconstruction and 4 lanes, yet this fools are here entertaining the public with their stupidity

  4. Nigeria has never had any government as corrupt as Buhari’s killer fulani herdsmen LED federal government.

The same Buhari approved N27 billions for the renovation of the national assembly.

Jonathan conducted 2015 election with 95 billions whereas Buhari conducted 2019 election with 214 billion.

I can go on and on with facts and figures and indices of Buhari’s malfeasance and financial infractions.

Buhari has finished Nigeria. He has turned Nigeria to a debtor country.

Buhari is worse than Abacha. History MUST judge him HARSHLY. Providence will never be fair with him.

Such a very corrupt and incompetent President.

What a plaque on Nigeria. What a country. There was a country.

What a situation. I take a stroll. Nonsense.

  5. What is the PDP governors looking at the approval meeting. The spokesman refused to give alternative with analysis to back his arguments. You can’t critisized without a better alternative.
