The 317 Zamfara schoolgirls, abducted at Government Secondary School in Jangebe have not been released, contrary to earlier reports.

Multiple reports had said the girls were in the palace of the Emir of Anka on Sunday, waiting for transportation to Gusau, the state capital.

But Zamfara government officials and the police later debunked the story.

Governor Bello Matawalle told a Federal Government delegation led by Aviation minister, Hadi Sirika that negotiations to rescue the girls were still ongoing.

He said the girls would be released very soon.

The Zamfara Police Command similarly debunked the story.

Police PRO Mohammed Shehu said the Command, in Collaboration with other security agencies and the state government, was intensifying efforts that will lead to the safe rescue of the students.

The Command urged the public to discountenance the story.

It appealed to any person or group with any credible information about the abducted students to contact the following senior officers of the Command on their phone numbers, to rescue the students.

The 317 girls were kidnapped on Friday by gunmen, who overran a military checkpoint near the school.

Some of the girls who escaped earlier said women were among the terrorists who came to kidnap them.

“One woman in black attire woke me up by banging a gun on my bed and shouting at me. I woke up in fear. I observed that dozens of my colleagues were being sent out of the dormitory”, said Madina Hamisu Kawaye, in an interview published by Daily Trust.

Kawaye said she sneaked under a double bunk as the armed woman went to wake other students from their sleep.
