President Muhammadu Buhari has finally succumbed to public pressure to dispense with his service chiefs, who have overstayed their tenure for several years.

In an announcement today, Media adviser, Femi Adesina, said Buhari has accepted the immediate resignation of the Service Chiefs, and their retirement from service.

Those involved are the Chief of Defence Staff, General Abayomi Olonisakin; Chief of Army Staff, Lt-Gen. Tukur Buratai; Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibok Ekwe Ibas; and Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar.

The new Service Chiefs are: Major-General Leo Irabor, Chief of Defence Staff; Major-General I. Attahiru, Chief of Army Staff; Rear Admiral A.Z Gambo, Chief of Naval Staff; and Air-Vice Marshal I.O Amao, Chief of Air Staff.

Buhari thanked the old Service Chiefs for what he called their “overwhelming achievements in our efforts at bringing enduring peace to our dear country.”

He also wished them well in their future endeavours.

Buhari also congratulated the new Service Chiefs, and urged them to be loyal and dedicated in the discharge of their responsibilities.

With the appointment of new service chiefs, Buhari appeared to have responded to the strident call by Nigerians, asking him to change the heads of the security agencies and service chiefs.

After the release of the kidnapped 344 Kankara schoolboys, Buhari promised to do something in the New Year about Nigeria’s security.

He made the promise in an interview with NTA.

Buhari said: “I am extremely worried about insecurity and I hope next year will be different.

“Those among the law enforcement agencies that will remain in charge will be extremely busy,” Buhari said.

“We have a lot of work ahead. We have a lot of work to do,” the President noted, adding that he would not say more, so as not to compromise security.

In his New Year broadcast, he came close to disclosing his plans, when he promised to “re-organise and re-energise”, the security, in line with his promise on 18 December.

He has now begun the re-organisation with a change of personnel at the top.

The new faces appointed to head the military may be the beginning of the security reform that he promised.

  1. As long as this demon continues excluding igbo from his security chiefs this prevailing insecurity will never end. Nigeria will NEVER know peace. Sideline NDIGBO at your own peril.
