The United Nations is set to appoint Nickolay Mladenov, the current UN Middle East envoy, as its new Libya envoy.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres on Friday informed the Security Council of his intent to appoint the Bulgarian diplomat as his special envoy to Libya, in a letter.

Mladenov would also lead the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), the UN political mission in the country.

The 15-member council is not expected to raise any objections to the pick.

Mladenov is set to replace Ghassan Salame, from Lebanon, who unexpectedly quit in March after two-and-a-half years on the job, citing health reasons.
