India’s covid-19 cases now 5th in the world

India on Sunday registered 9,971 new coronavirus cases in a fresh single-day record jump.

With the new cases, India has passed Spain to be the fifth worst-hit country by the pandemic.

The spike came after India eased restrictions, allowing malls, restaurants, hotels and places of worship to be re-opened.

In its daily update, the health ministry said the total number of infections rose to 246,628. Over 8,000 cases are being recorded on a daily basis for several days now.

According to John Hopkins University, the caseload crossed Spain with a tally of 241,310.

India was only behind the US, Brazil, Russia and Britain in terms of number of confirmed infections.

Meanwhile, India’s Covid-19 fatalities have been relatively low compared to countries like Italy.

However, experts warned that the second-most populous country with 1.3 billion inhabitants, had yet to see the peak of the pandemic.
