After days and weeks of denial, some mystery deaths and rising cases of those seeking medicare, the Bonny Local Government Council in Rivers, has admitted two confirmed cases of COVID-19.

The cases were diagnosed on 30 May.

David Rogers Irimagha, chairman of the Bonny Council said the two cases are stable.

The patients are also being quarantined at the Bonny Covid-19 isolation centre.

He said that officials of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and the Rivers State Ministry of health are available to provide care to the patients and initiate contact tracing.

Irimagha stated that since the first cases of Covid-19 were recorded in Rivers State, Bonny Local Government has worked in line with the directives of the Rivers State Government to put in place safeguards to checkmate the spread of this deadly disease.

This includes mandatory temperature checks at all entry points into Bonny, compulsory hand washing and use of alcoholic based hand sanitizers in public places.

Also health advisories were placed at strategic points of the island.

The open markets were closed and public gatherings banned.

Irimagha said with the current situation, the council will issue revised guidelines to enable the people understand the coronavirus better and how they can help in preventing its spread further.

He also said the Covid-19 monitoring committee in the council will also step-up the sensitization tour which it has been undertaking for the past two months.

Rivers of which Bonny is a part, is 12th among Nigerian states on the coronavirus grim chart.

It has 239 confirmed cases, 157 of which are active.

Sixty eight people have been discharged, while 14 have died.
