The Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) today sealed off a 4-storey building with visible signs of distress at No. 17, Obadina Street Lagos Island.

According to the General Manager of the Agency, Engr. Biola Kosegbe, the Agency acted on a tip-off by some concerned citizens prompting a swift response by the Agency in sending a technical team to ascertain the level of distress.

She revealed that on close observation, the building was found to exhibit clear signs of internal distress namely massive spalling of concrete from the soffit of the upper floor slab probably due to moisture. This was obvious from the exposed corroded reinforcement.

She added that the structure was immediately sealed off temporarily, while residents were advised to evacuate the building.

Engr. Kosegbe stated that further assessment will commence immediately by a team of Structural Engineers from the Agency while the Lagos State Materials Testing Laboratory will also conduct appropriate structural stability tests on concrete members. This she said will assist the Government to take necessary steps to avert any mishap.

Whilst thanking all Stakeholders in the Building Industry, Engr. Kosegbe reiterated that the Agency would ensure that lives and properties of Lagosians are secured by identifying distressed and prone-to collapse buildings in the State with a view to removing them swiftly.

She also urged everyone to be their brother’s keeper by notifying the Agency of any distressed building within their environment.
