Russia on Sunday registered 10,633 new coronavirus infections, marking a fresh one-day European record increase.

The new infections raised the national total to 134,687, Russian authorities said.

On Saturday, the country also set another European record of 9,623 cases.

Russia is now the European country registering the biggest new daily infections.

However, the official fatality rate is low in comparison to countries such as Italy, UK, Spain and the United States.

Italy has 28,710 deaths and the UK 28,131. Spain is third in Europe with 25,100 deaths.

The United States leads the world with 67,448 deaths.

In contrast, 58 people died in Russia over the past 24 hours, bringing the total death toll to 1,280.

Moscow mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the Russian capital, which has emerged as the epicenter of the contagion, has not passed the peak.

Moscow recorded 5,948 new cases, bringing the capital’s total to 68,606.
