The Director General, Lagos State Safety Commission, Mr. Lanre Mojola has reiterated government’s commitment to safety of lives and property of Lagosians.
He disclosed this in commemoration of the World Day for Safety and Health, tagged: “Stop the Pandemic, Safety and Health can Save Lives,” in Lagos.
Mojola stated that the Word Day for Safety and Health was an annual event celebrated globally on 28th April by the International Labour Organization (ILO), initiated to create awareness on accident prevention and reduction of work related illnesses and injuries at work places.
He declared that various institutions and governments were faced with challenges of combating the pandemic ravaging the globe and that there was a need for continuous campaign on prevention and safety in workplaces.
According to him, “occupational health and safety is a global phenomenon which cannot be ignored or compromised,” adding that it was worrisome that COVID-19 infections had posed threats to public health and rise in fatalities, which had led to global economic and social lockdowns.
He said the 2020 World Day for Safety and Health focused on Embracing safe practices in all workplaces and developing means of practical action for the protection of workers and their mental health and effective implementation of sound occupational safety and health management systems in combating illnesses, injuries and fatalities at work places.
Others, he said, were promoting standards and code of ethics during and post pandemic; strategic recovery, future preparedness and integrating measures into occupational safety and health (OSH) and management systems and policies at the national, state and enterprise levels.
Commissioner, Ministry of Special Duties and Inter-governmental Relations, Engr. Tayo Bamgbose-Martins commended Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his strong leadership, especially under this challenging period.
He said the governor was committed to ensuring a safe and secured environment through various precautionary measures put in place to combat the COVID-19 pandemic, which he said was in line with the mandate of making Lagos State Africa’s model mega city.
Bamgbose-Martins enumerated some decisive measures put in place to flatten the curve of COVID-19 which included, but not limited to closure of public and private workplaces, provision of palliatives for the most vulnerable members of the public to relieve the effect of the lockdown and encouraging social distancing and self- isolation.
Others, according to him, were encouraging regular hand washing and respiratory hygiene, massive publicity and enlightenment campaign on how to flatten the curve, construction of isolation centres across the state, rapid response and care for COVID-19 victims and provision of remuneration and insurance for health workers among others.
He urged members of the public to support government’s efforts and intervention measures by complying with rules and regulations, adding that the government would do whatever was necessary to control the impact of the pandemic until normalcy.
