A total of 26 members from the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) tested positive for COVID-19, the UN mission announced on Thursday during its weekly press briefing.

According to MINUSMA, these patients, treated by Malian health authorities in Bamako, are “placed in isolation and receive adequate care”.

MINUSMA also reported that two patients are cured, reducing the number of active cases to 24 within the mission.

“In our camps, preventive measures are being reinforced with the multiplication of handwashing devices, twice-weekly disinfection of sanitary facilities, permanent contact with local COVID-19 response teams, but also the closure of public spaces,” spokesperson for MINUSMA Olivier Salgado said.

In the center of the country, MINUSMA provided logistical support to the 100 young volunteers recruited to help contain the spread of the virus. The mission also carried out prevention activities in Mopti.

In Menaka, north-eastern Mali, MINUSMA and the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) also recently helped the Regional Directorate of Health and Public Hygiene to prepare hygiene kits for the implementation of COVID-19 prevention activities.

As of Thursday, Mali had reported 309 positive cases, including 21 deaths and 77 patients cured.
