Dr Ogungbemi Olalekan, a Humanitarian Health Professional, on Tuesday called for effective and improved collaboration with the Federal Government to bring coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) under control in Nigeria.

Olalekan in Lafia said that corporate bodies, private organisations and individuals needed improved and effective partnership to keep the pandemic under control.

Olalekan, also the Founder and Head of Humanitarian Health Service of Moole Charity Foundation and a Clinician with the United Kingdom National Health Service, said he was currently monitoring the situation in Nigeria.

According to him, without multi-sectoral approach, the pandemic can be worsened; hence the call becomes necessary considering the level of fatalities the virus is causing in the developed world with advanced medical equipment in their hospitals.

Olalekan, while commending the efforts of the federal government for putting measures to prevent the spread of the virus, said it needs to do more to prevent the dangerous situation the world is facing from happening in Nigeria.

“While the Nigerian government has taken some measures and the right steps to fight this health challenge, it clearly needs to do more considering what is happening in Spain, Italy and the U.S. that have effective health care systems.

“All that Nigeria needs now is concerted efforts to fight this common enemy to prevent an impending disaster.

“Government cannot do it alone; corporate bodies, private organisations and individuals need improved and effective partnership to keep the pandemic under control,” he said.

Olalekan said his foundation has begun rolling out programmes to assist humanity to cushion the effect of hardship and hunger by feeding over 1000 households in Nigeria.

He explained that the plans were underway by the foundation to expand its COVID – 19 humanitarian services to other African countries.

“We are making efforts to help worse hit countries to scale through this period of the pandemic, we have supported the NHS frontlines to screen and treat infected cases thereby reducing the strain on the UK National Health Service,” he said.

He frowned at non-observance of the social distancing and lockdown order by some people, noting that it would be sad if Nigeria failed to prevent maximum damage from the pandemic after all the warnings it received.

He enjoined Nigerians to be more patriotic by observing the directives from constituted authority as part of the measures put in place to contain the spread of COVID-19.
