The Nasarawa State Government has purchased a large quantity of grains to be distributed to the needy to cushion the effects of the partial lockdown in the state.
Mr Dogo Shammah, Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, made this known in Lafia on Monday.
He said that Gov. Abdullahi Sule had already constituted a task force that was saddled with the responsibility of working out modalities to contain the spread of coronavirus.
“The Committee Chaired by Mr Emmanuel Akabe, Deputy Governor of the state, had since directed the subcommittee on Agriculture to purchase massive food and store in food banks,” the commissioner said.
Shammah noted that the subcommittee headed by the Commissioner of Agriculture and Water Resources, Prof. Allahnana Otaki, had since identified the food banks and had commenced the purchase of grains.
He said that modalities for distribution were still being worked out and would be made public by the governor when concluded.
Shammah promised that the government would ensure that the process was not hijacked and the foods get to those that really need them.
He assured the people of the state that the government would continue to prioritise their health, security and welfare.
The governor on April 2 imposed a 24-hour curfew on Karu Local Government Area.
The governor restricted movements from 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. in other parts of the state, among other measures to contain the spread of coronavirus.
The governor had also ordered a partial shutdown of markets and directed civil servants from Grade Level one to 12 to operate from home.
