Pape Diouf, former president of French football club Olympique Marseille, died in Senegal Tuesday night of COVID-19.

He became the first person to die of the disease in the country.

Diouf, 68 years old, was in critical condition before his death.

A former journalist and football agent, he became Olympique Marseille President in 2005 and quit in 2009.

His death was announced today as Senegalese ministry of health reported another 15 confirmed cases of COVID-19.

The country’s total number of confirmed cases is now 190.

According to the ministry of Health and Social Action, one of the 15 new cases was imported.

The remaining 14 cases were close contacts of earlier confirmed cases.

Spokesman of the ministry, Alyose Waly Diouf said 75 of the confirmed cases of 190 were imported.

Forty-five patients have been declared cured by local health authorities, he said.

President Macky Sall on 23 March, declared a state of emergency and imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew.

Sall also banned public or private meetings of any kind, and ordered temporary closure of public places and meeting places.

Senegal has suspended all international passenger flights till April 17.
