Cases of coronavirus exploded across Africa on Sunday, reaching a new milestone of 4,282.

In Burkina Faso, Vincent Dabilgou is the sixth minister to test positive since the country reported the first case on 9 March.

Dabilgou is the Minister of Transport.

The country’s ministers of education, territorial administration, foreign affairs, mining and trade had also tested positive. U.S. ambassador, Andrew Young, tested positive on March 22.

Coronavirus cases in Burkina Faso are now 207, the highest in West Africa.

Twenty one people have been cured and 11 dead.

Cases surge in Africa

The confirmed cases in 46 African countries reached 4,282 on Sunday, the Africa Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) said.

The AU agency put the death toll at 134.

South Africa is the worst-hit country with 1,170 confirmed cases.

It is followed by Egypt with 576 cases, Algeria 454 and Morocco 402.

The Africa CDC said 302 people recovered. There were also 358 new cases.

North Africa is the most affected region, in terms of positive cases and fatalities.

The region registered 1,716 cases and 98 deaths.

West Africa

In West Africa, coronavirus cases are rising in Senegal.

Senegalese Ministry of Health and Social Action reported on Sunday 12 new cases, bringing the country’s tally to 142.

Among the 142 cases, 68 were imported.

Minister of Health and Social Action Abdoulaye Sarr said 27 patients have been cured.

The cases in Ghana also surged to 152 on Sunday, with 11 confirmed by Ghana Health Service (GHS).

Ten of the new cases were Guinean residents in Ghana who travelled through Burkina Faso and Togo.

The 11th case was recorded in Kumasi, the second-largest city. Five deaths were confirmed in the country.
