UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson: coronavirus death toll soars

The United Kingdom on Friday recorded its biggest coronavirus death toll, on a day Prime Minister Boris Johnson disclosed his shocking status.

Officials announced 181 new deaths, taking the total to 759.

Health chiefs also confirmed 2,921 new infections, meaning 14,579 Britons have the virus.

The new cases announced are also a record, compared with 2,129 cases earlier.

On Thursday, Britain’s death toll jumped by 113, then considered the darkest day yet.

Out of the 181 new deaths, Scotland reported eight, Wales six and Northern Ireland three.

The rest occurred in England.

Government scientists have admitted there is likely to be 1,000 infected patients for every death recorded in Britain – suggesting the true toll is in the region of 600,000.
