Banditry in Nigeria

An non-governmental organisation, Save Our Heritage Initiative (SOHI), has attributed high rate of insecurity in the country to moral decadence and lack of regard to societal norms and values.

Ms. May Ikokwu, Chief Executive Officer, SOHI, said this in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.

She decried the high level of social depravity ranging from terrorism, armed robbery and banditry in recent times, saying they were negations of African values and traditions.

She called on parents to inculcate morals of love, respect and value for lives in their children aimed at stemming the tide of insecurity in Nigeria.

According to her, neighbourly love is panacea to insecurity and other social decadence that threaten the country’s peaceful coexistence.

Ikokwu, who is also Secretary General, Coalition of Societies for the Rights of Old People in Nigeria (COSROPIN), also called on parents to teach their children the importance and benefits of diligence and hard work for a secured future.

The COSROPIN scribe identified “wealth without work’’ mentality among the youths as another threat to the security of the nation.

According to her, many of the youths dream big without working toward achieving that dream but prefer to cut corners.

Ikokwu, who commended some youths for toeing the path of honour, called the delinquent few to embrace hard work, love, respect and honesty as values for living.

She explained that inculcating the culture of honesty and respect in the youths would not only mould them as responsible personalities but guarantee a secured future for the country.
