The top Republican in the House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy, on Thursday, said the Democrats’ multi-billion-dollar aid package to respond to the economic effects of the coronavirus outbreak “comes up short”.
McCarthy said a deal could still be reached within two days.
The Democrats’ proposal is expected to move to the House floor on Thursday, but the Republicans control the Senate.
President Donald Trump and his Republican party are coordinating on this issue.
“It’s more important that we get it right.
“This is a time and a place that you do not want to rush something,’’ McCarthy said.
The Democrats have been aiming to help workers, including through paid sick leave.
