Family of late Chima Ikwunado, an auto-mechanic allegedly tortured to death by officers of E-crack Squad in Mile One Police Station, Port Harcourt, has sued the police, demanding for N10 billion damages over his torture and death.

The lawyer to the Ikwunado family, Princess Chinyere Lawrence, said the 10billion naira damages was part of the fundamental human rights suit filed by wife of the late mechanic at the Federal High Court, Port Harcourt.

At the hearing of the matter in court, the Presiding Judge, Justice Kolawole Omotosho, advised the lawyer to the family to amend their applications before the next adjourned date ,noting that suit filed by late Chima’s wife over fundamental human rights abuse did not arise as there was no evidence that police tortured her husband.

He advised the lawyer to make necessary adjustments to suit the case at hand.

The matter was adjourned to the 17 March for the continuation of hearing.

Meanwhile, lawyer to the police, Isokari Egop, said the many suits filed by the Ikwunado family might amount to an abuse of court processes and wondered if his learned colleague understood the briefs.

Lawyer Lawrence said her client would abide by the directives of the court to amend the applications and re-file the appropriate charges.
