A 20-year-old herdsman, Umar Amodu, was on Thursday arraigned before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court for alleged theft of two cows.

Amodu, whose address was not given is facing a count charge of stealing, to which he pleaded not guilty.

The prosecutor, Insp. Caleb Leranmo told the court that the defendant and others at large committed the offence on March 7 at about 10:00 a.m behind NTA in Ado-Ekiti.

He alleged that the defendant stole two cows valued at N500,000 belonging to one Hajia Adama.

Leranmo said that the complainant gave the cows to the defendant, who was a Fulani herdsman, to rear for her, but the defendant did not return the cows back to her before he travelled.

He added that when he came back, the complainant demanded for her cows but he lied that he has given the cows to the complainant’s son before he travelled which was not true.

He said the offence contravened Section 390(9) of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ekiti State 2012.

The prosecutor urged the court to adjourn the case to enable him study the file and assemble his witnesses.

Counsel to the defendant, Mr Olatunde Olayemi, urged the court to grant his client bail and promised that the defendant would not jump bail.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr Abdulhamid Lawal, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum.

He adjourned the case until April 7, for hearing.
