21-year old sent to prison for attempted rape

A 21-year old Lagos Island youth, Oluwaseun Adejohn, has been arraigned before a Lagos Magistrate Court over attempt to forcefully have sex with his neighbor, Taibat Abibat, after her parents left for work.

The accused was arrested by the police at Lion Building Division led by Inspector Gboyega Oyeniyi and charged before the Igbosere Magistrate Court, Lagos on a two-count charge of attempt to rape.

Police Counsel, Godspower Ehizoba told the court in charge No Q/06/2020 that the accused committed the offence at 71, Freeman Street, Lagos Island, where he resides with the victim.

Ehizoba informed the court that the accused left his ground floor apartment of the building and went to meet the victim who was sleeping at about 10 am on the second floor and pounced on her, held her neck and attempted to rape her.

Ehizoba said screaming by the victim attracted neighbours of the building who rushed to the scene to rescue her and held the accused and invited the police to arrest him.

He said the offences the accused committed were punishable under sections 262 and 173 of the criminal law of Lagos State 2015.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges in the open court and his counsel, Oriarebhaegbe, urged the court to grant the defendant bail in the most liberal terms promising that he would not jump bail if granted.

Magistrate, Mr F. Onanusi granted the defendant N20,000 bail with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case till 30 March, 2020 for mention.

Onanusi ordered that the defendant be kept at the Ikoyi correctional facility till he perfected the bail conditions.
