Ikorodu Local Government in Lagos State has embarked on sensitisation campaign for residents to maintain good hygiene in order to prevent coronavirus and Lassa fever.

The Council Chairman, Mr Wasiu Adesina, on Tuesday in Ikorodu said that the programme was geared towards educating the people on the prevention of the diseases.

The chairman added that with the confirmation of the second case of coronavirus in Nigeria, the council would intensify its effort and put all emergency measures in place to create awareness in all the wards.

“Following the discovery of first and second cases of coronavirus, we are initiating a sensitisation campaign to educate Ikorodu residents on the need to live a good healthy life by maintaining hand and respiratory hygiene.

“We are communicating to our people through jingles and street campaigns to sensitise our people on the need to have a clean environment,’’ Adesina said.

According to him, the council will soon meet with Community Development Councils (CDC) and direct medical officers of the council to intimate them about the killer diseases and its prevention.

Also speaking, the Iyaloja of Ikorodu, Mrs Taofikat Allinson, said that she had commenced sensitisation programme among the market men and women in the area.

According to her, the sensitisation programme is normally held during the weekly meetings of the representatives of all the markets in the community.

“Part of what we discuss during our meetings is how to ensure that they do their businesses in a clean environment to attract customers, as well as creating awareness on Lassa fever and coronavirus,” she said.

According to her, all segment market leaders will be mandated to sensitise traders within their jurisdictions to be conscious of the dreaded virus by engaging in thorough environmental cleanliness.

“Unclean environment attracts diseases, so we will engage in out-door jingles and a continuous announcement during our weekly meeting to sensitise our people in various markets centres,’’ she said.
