One person has been killed as the canopy of a three-storey building collapsed at Palm Groove, Ikorodu Road on Saturday.

Director General, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu confirmed that one person died in the collapse.

According to him, upon arrival at the scene, it was discovered that the canopy of a 3-storey building belonging to one of the banks collapsed while being renovated.

“It was reported that a single male labourer, identified as Ezekiel Ajibola, aged 35 years lost his life from the incident.
LRT, LASG fire and Police were at the scene and concluded joint efforts to retrieve the remains of the victim which were handed over to officers of the Pedro Police Station.

“The area has been cordoned off to prevent any secondary incident. Recovery operation completed,” he said.

Oke-Osanyintolu said the affected 3-storey property was under renovation, saying that “the Concrete canopy attached above door level on ground floor collapsed due to inadequate reinforcement under the weight of concrete and probably was added on as an afterthought.

“The workers were working this evening around 6-7pm. One of the artisans was apparently polishing the floor tiles, whilst another was at the top rendering. The canopy collapsed on the artisan on ground level,” he said.
