A commuter train station in Northern California was closed for eight hours on Saturday after police shot and critically injured an armed young man.
Local media reported that Police Chief Ed Alvarez of the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system told a news conference that the young man, who was involved in an argument with a young woman, suffered “life-threatening injuries” during a shooting when police officers saw him produce a hand gun and opened fire.
The KPIX 5 TV quoted Alvarez as saying that the suspect ran out of the train and onto the tracks after encountering the police officers, which prompted the police to chase after him at the El Cerrito del Norte station.
The police chief was said to have narrated that gun was produced by the suspect and that his shooting by the police was ultimately to recover the weapon.
