Edo varsity trains staff on modern learning tools

The management of the Edo University, Iyamho, Edo State, has organised a training workshop for members of staff of the University on the use of CANVAS LMS/AIS and Smart/Electronic Boards for effective teaching and learning delivery.

The Edo State owned University was the first in West Africa to acquire the CANVAS Learning Management System (LMS) and now the Academic Information System (AIS).

Addressing participants at the workshop, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Emmanuel Aluyor, noted that Edo University has continued to acquire modern teaching and learning technology to deliver the highest possible quality education available anywhere in the world to the students.

He said there was need for them to be regularly trained to enable them make effective use of the modern facilities available to them in the University.

“Essentially, the training, which is a continuous exercise, is to ensure that we can get the maximum benefits from these facilities that we have acquired for use in the University.

“We already have a requirement that all our academic staff should be computer literate, but being a computer literate is not enough to be able to use a smart board and other modern teaching and learning tools, hence, the training.

“We do these training from time to time to maximize the use of these facilities and get the benefits for the students,” he said.

The VC urged members of staff to go beyond their comfort zone to enable them contribute meaningfully to the development of the University, even as he promised to take care of their welfare.

He however reiterated his commitment in providing the necessary and best legacies for both the staff, students and the university at large as a World class university.

Also speaking at the training, the Chairman of Edo University Iyamho Learning Management Committee, Dr. Akinyola Olayinka, said that the CANVAS LMS/AIS would be beneficial to the staff, students and the University in the modern day teaching and learning environment.

According to him, the CANVAS LMS is an online platform that creates interaction between the students and teachers.

On his part, Dr. Wilson Nwankwo, an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science, said that the Academic Information System (AIS) is an integrated system, providing computerized learning platform for both the lecturers and the students of higher learning.
