A don, Dr Derbie Ayomiposi, has called for more involvement of women in science courses to ensure growth and development of the Nigerian society.

Ayomiposi, who lectures at the Osun State University, said women must do away with any form of stigmatisation and inferiority complex for them to be able to compete with their male counterparts.

She spoke at a programme organised for secondary school students to mark the International Day for Women and Girls in sciences, on Tuesday in Osogbo.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the programme was organised by Tech Girls Club, in collaboration with Success Waymarks Foundation.

Ayomiposi, who is also the Convener of Women and Girls in Sciences, noted that women must be encouraged to take up science-related courses, assuring that scholarship awaited outstanding women or girls.

She said that the United Nations’ recommendation of Feb. 11 every year for the International Day of Women and Girls in Sciences was to inspire and motivate women in sciences to develop in their chosen fields.

“It is pertinent for women to be represented in various fields of study, especially science and technology.

“I want to say that women in sciences are not boring and that they tend to draw inspiration from fellow women who have impacted the world in their chosen careers.

“We know the likes of Katherine Johnson, Mary Jackson and Dora Akunliyi, among others, who have inspired women by the principles with which they lived and also being champions in their various fields,” Ayomiposi said.

A participant, Miss Emmanuella Grace, who is a science student of Fakunle High School, Osogbo, commended the organisers of the programme and promised to work harder towards becoming a great scientist.

Grace said science students must be focused and committed to their studies, adding that they must never get carried away by situations around them.
