Soyinka at war with Balarabe Musa over Amotekun

Soyinka and Musa

By Kazeem Ugbodaga

Nigeria’s Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka has blasted former impeached Governor of Kaduna State, Alhaji Balarabe Musa over his comment that the Southwest established Amotekun because they wanted to create Oduduwa Republic.

Soyinka, in a statement, on Tuesday said Musa was wrong about his assertion on the reason Amotekun was established by the Southwest region.

“Balarabe is sadly, but I hope not tragically wrong. I invoke the tragic dimension here because the making of tragedy, especially for nations, often begins when fears are mistaken or promoted as facts, and governments either by themselves, or together with interest groups, are enticed by fears into embarking on precipitate, irrational, and irreversible acts.

“Such acts turn out tin the end to be based on nothing but fears, sometimes generated by guilt over past injustices, such as inequitable dealing. That is the basis of tragedy, towards which nations are propelled by a partial, or wrongful reading of socio-political realities and – history. I would like to see this nation avoid such a blunder. So, I am certain, would Balarabe Musa,” he said.

Soyinka added that raising the spectre of secession was a facile approach to the dangerous, self-evident lapses in governance which Balarabe himself acknowledged in his response to the Amotekun principle made flesh.

He said the midwives of Amotekun had repeatedly acknowledged that theirs is only a contribution towards a crisis of escalating proportions and that other states should be encouraged to emulate, not misread such initiatives, then demonize them by false attributions, saying “that is the certain recipe for tragedy.”

However, Musa had said in an interview that the Southwest established Amotekun because it wanted to create Oduduwa Republic, warning that it was a ploy to secure Yoruba land and a prelude to the declaration of Oduduwa Republic.

Musa further said that some of the security components of the outfit like the OPC had records of recklessness in terms of securing the lives and property of non-Yoruba.

“First of all, taking into account what happened in the history of Nigeria, this Amotekun will lead to a declaration of Oduduwa Republic.

“Look at the composition of those who constitute the organization in addition to the six states governors. There is also the OPC, Afenifere, and others. So the fear is quite obvious. And this is in spite of the fact that this government is incompetent.

“Definitely, this government is incompetent. And it is because of the incompetence of this government that this problem has arisen. But let us also not forget that this Federal Government is an alliance between the North and the Southwest.

“So, why should this happen? Any correction in the set up of the country is possible if this alliance, which controls the government in the country can do its work,” he said.

  • A Parliamentarian from Western Nigeria should formerly introduce a bill requesting for the amendment of the Security Clause of the 1999 Constitution to address the issue of "Amotekun Infrastructure" including grounds upon which it can be reproduced in other communities since the present Federal Structure has not guaranteed the security of lives and property of the constituent units.

  • I would like to say that though the step taken by the SW governments on the security challenges in the zone is welcome but I think they should go a step further by initiating a bill to the houses of assembly toto become law . that's is constitutional in the Democratic dispensation am allay unnecessary fears

  • I dont know why the northern elders are jittery about Amotekun initiatives, afterall the South West, South South and Southeast were not threatened with the sharia initiative when they were implementing it. If they dont want Amotekun, they should promulgate sharia law and dissolve hisbah. Then we can start talking about Amotekun. However SS & SE will soon come up with their own security initiatives, may be that will reduce Hausa/Fulani cum herdsmen killing in Nigeria.

  • All i see here is a failed constitution our leaders have no respect for the constitution they create and established what so ever they like believe me or not there is nothing like one Nigeria because this part of the world was discovered by the selfish British this is not a country because there have not been leaders from the beginning their children don't school here they attended to their medical problems abroad etc and once their children are done studying over there they come back here and becomes top government officials while the poor masses who struggle so hard to study in our universities becomes bike rides and conductors our ladies now need big ass to get a decent job after sleeping with several bosses just to be able to secure a decent job its high time the youths wake and take out these old thieves or Nigeria should go to regional rule for now we are not ready for their thief one Nigeria

  • His comment is reflective of the fact that there still exists mutual suspicion of each other amongst the federating units. And this is where the Yoruba failes; they failed to take this fact into account when structuring Amotekun. And now that these fears are manifesting, they have also handled it badly by abusing and insulting every dissenting voice instead of going round to re-assure co-travellers of their true good intentions. Abusing, insulting and threatening every other person that expresses a comcern will not help anyone. The reaction from the Yoruba people and groups is most unlike them. I have always known them to be intellectually inclined. Perhaps a lot of their leaders have passed on and the current leadership is gradually losing their traditional style.

People must always misunderstand your motives: convince them

    • why should the yorubas go around to beg forAmotekun's acceptance. When and how many times did the north beg for Sharia or Hisbah's acceptance?

    • Why should anyone from yonder read a negative motive to something that is wanted by the people for their life? Only fear and guilty conscience can make one to be suspicious of another's intention. Yoruba's are still intellectually inclined and the reason why they can come up with a homeland security against a tribalist government with a colonialist agenda.

  • A huffy statement from Mallam Balarabe Musa. It is another sad day for this nation, an elder statesman like Mallam Balarabe Musa should know better. His comment is a testimony to the divide that has plagued Nigeria.

    • So, what is wrong with Oduduwa Republic? If Amotekun is a route, Balarabe Musa MUST also know that Buhari was sold to the SW on "fighting corruption" and integrity, as a route for him to get power. He has not only institutionalized corruption more than ever before--his nepotism, revanchism, Fulani Chauvinism etc; his "integrity" is in tatters, at least in Yorubaland.
And Balarabe himself nko? Scratch a "northern Nigeria nationalist" and you will discover a Fulani Chauvinist--this was proven by Balarabe, although not Fulani, but he has surrendered his Nationality to the Fulani by his follow-follow with the Fulani prince and historian, Bala Usman
It is also recalled that Balarabe Musa withdrew from NADECO claiming that it "has become a Yoruba movement"--as if the Yoruba are not a people with their own desires.
Before him, his mentor, Aminu Kano NEVER "fell back" from pursuing northern interests, "talakawa" nothwithstanding. That was why his "base" did not go beyond his Kano and parts of Kaduna.
So, who is Balarabe fooling? yeye de smell

    • As an academic Prof. should by now be aware that ideas are neither right or wrong. It's a question of perspective of the discussants.
Balarabe Musa highlighted the motive which was hidden by the promoters. That's the aspect that worry him as an elder statesman and someone who saw everything.
The Hon. Minister of Justice spoke of the legal perspective of the new outfit. All these ideas are input into the discussions.
I think it is time for our elites to see things not in terms of for or against, but another side of the issue.
In the end whether you are for or against, the decision to correct or affirm is elsewhere.
