Nigeria’s national team to the 2019 Nigeria Taekwondo Open on Sunday emerged champions with a haul of 10 medals.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Team Nigeria emerged the best side of the three-day championship at the Abuja National Stadium’s velodrome after nine gold and one silver medals.

Speaking at the end of the event, Solomon Dalung, the Minister of Youths and Sports, said the championship was part of the new frontiers which would open up Nigeria sports.

Represented by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Adesade Olusola, he said the country was prepared to host many more international tournaments this year.

Dalung congratulated the Nigeria Taekwondo Federation (NTF) for successfully hosting a G-1 championship, adding that the federation has the capacity to do better in the near future.

Also speaking, Elizabeth Binga, the President of NTF, attributed the success of the event to full cooperation received from members of the federation’s board and other well-meaning stakeholders.

Binga used the opportunity to urge wealthy individuals and the corporate world to identify with the federation in its activities.

She said she was optimistic that with the successful hosting of the 2019 G-1 rated Nigeria Taekwondo Open, corporate organisations would get interested in supporting the sport.
