The University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) has expressed worry over delay in release of funds for the hosting of the 14th edition of West Africa Universities Games Association (WAUG).

Prof. Regina Ogali, Chairman of WAUG 2018 Local Organising Committee (LOC), told newsmen at the university’s sports centre, venue of games in Port Harcourt, on Thursday that the university was yet to receive funds from sponsors.

“We are yet to receive funds from sponsors and partners one week before kick-off of the games,” Ogali said adding that they were financially constrained.

He said in spite of the challenges, “we are in high spirits”.
Ogali said both Federal and Rivers State Governments were the major targets for funds and assured that they were using all available avenues to reach out to them for a successful hosting.

He advised that the games should not be viewed only as UNIPORT affairs but rather as a national event of interest.

Ogali was hopeful of last minute surprises from the both government and other sponsors.
“We need funds to retouch our facilities and venues, including the enormous logistics that will go with the event; time is against us.
“People will remember that the WAUG games held in UNIPORT, but if anything goes wrong they will call out Nigeria and Rivers state for criticism,” he said.

Ogali said in spite of financial constraints, efforts were in top gear to ensure a successful competition.
The LOC chairman said 85 universities from 14 West African countries were scheduled to participate in the 65 years, sub-regional sporting fiesta, holding between Oct. 21 and Nov. 12.

“We have done all that is within our power of organisation to put up a memorable event while expecting everything to go according to plan.
“Some attraction that spectators will witness are lighting of the games torch, star parade, cultural dances, art exhibition, acrobatic and spectacular fireworks displays, among others,” he said.

About 5,000 athletes, 800 technical officials and coaches are expected to participate in the 10-day sports competition.
