A Karmo Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, on Thursday sentenced one John Asahaga, to three months imprisonment for attempting to escape from police custody.

The judge, Mr Inuwa Maiwada, however, gave the convict an option of N5, 000 fine and warned him to be of good behaviour.

Asahaga, who resides at Utako village Abuja, had pleaded guilty to a two-count charge of attempt to escape from lawful custody and mischief and pleaded for leniency.

“Please sir, temper justice with mercy, times are hard, and no work in the country,” he pleaded.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Ijeoma Ukagha, had told the court that a team of police officers and joint tax force, on Oct. 18, while on patrol, arrested Asahaga.

Ukagha said Asahaga was arrested for constituting public nuisance within Utako District, Abuja.

He said that Asahaga was previously warned to desist from such act.

The prosecutor said that during police investigation, while in detention, Asahaga attempted to escape from police custody, but was re-arrested.

The prosecutors said that in the process of attempting to escape from lawful custody, Asahaga damaged the police station’s door and also sustained injury on his head.

Ukagha said that the offences contravened the provisions of Sections 67 and 327 of the Penal Code.
