The Director of Sports in Benue, Mr. Philip Nongo, on Tuesday, said he was optimistic that Team Benue would win medals in all sports it would feature in at the 2018 National Youth Games (NYG).
The Games are scheduled to hold in Ilorin, Kwara from Sept. 7.
Nongo in Makurdi said that the Benue contingent had the capacity to win medals in all the sports it would be participating in.
He said that he was optimistic Benue would at least belong to the first overall five, adding that the Team Benue was aware of the rules of the Games which included not using overage youth.
“Our youths are all U-17 and we will ensure they abide by the rules of the competition,” he said.
He added that the Games would be an opportunity for Benue to expose its young athletes and build them for future engagements.
“Our target for the Games is to expose our youths, test their abilities and talent and prepare them for the competitions ahead.
“We have the ability to win medals in all the sports we are participating in,” the director said, adding that Team Benue would participate in 21 sports.
“We have two teams for Basketball and in the Hockey female category and we will also participate in 19 individual sports.”
Nongo said the Benue contingent to the Games would depart Makurdi on Friday, Sept. 7 with 111 athletes and 129 officials.
He commended Gov. Samuel Ortom for ensuring that the Benue contingent participated in the Games.
