Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode has empowered 250 ex-servicemen, widows and orphans and others with various items to eke out a living. The items are worth N25 million.

Items, such as sewing machines, grinding machines, generators, bags of rice, bags of semolina, standing fans, rechargeable fans, gas cylinders, ankara, among others were distributed to the beneficiaries at Lagos State Safety Arena in Oshodi, Lagos, Southwest Nigeria.

Speaking at the event, In his goodwill message at the event, Ambode said the empowerment which had been a continuous thing to show appreciation to families of fallen heroes, as well as the disabled and aged ex-servicemen, who had all contributed immensely to the sovereignty of our dear nation, Nigeria.

The governor, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Home Affairs, Toyin Awoseyi said that his administration was committed to alleviating poverty among ex-servicemen and their families and would continue to empower them towards self reliance.

Ambode urged them to be worthy ambassadors of the state “that has been so benevolent and magnanimous in its dealing with Lagos Council of the Nigerian Legion with numerous gifts which includes: a Hilux patrol van, an 18 seater Hilux bus, a trailer load of Lake Rice, employment of their members to oversee the security of state public schools and MDAs of Lagos State Government among others.”

He advised the beneficiaries to use the materials wisely to augment whatever comes their way.

The governor urged Nigerian to always treat ex-servicemen with respect and donate generously to support the Nigerian Legion.

“Let us show appreciation by extending adequate support and facilities for the benefit of the veterans and families of our fallen heroes. Above all let us join hands with the government in improving their welfare,” he said.

Speaking, Chairman, Lagos Council of the Nigerian Legion, Samuel Akande thanked Ambode for the donation of N25 million to the Legionnaires, adding that the governor had been very supportive of the Nigerian Legion since his assumption of office in 2015.

“In 2015 he donated N1 million, 2016 he donated N5 million, 2017 N25 million, you can guess what his Excellency will do this year in support of the cause of the widows, orphans, disabled and aged ex-servicemen”.

According to him, Ambode has adopted the Nigerain Legion as a baby that needs to be catered for since he became the governor of Lagos state; “he remains committed to our welfare and growth.

“This kind of empowerment and welfare support for widows, orphans, disabled and aged ex-servicemen will increase the confidence of serving military personnel in the government, with the hope and assurance of care for their families after serving with their life”, Akande said.

He enjoined his members to vote for Ambode who is putting smiles on their faces everyday and improving their well-being by ensuring he returned to power in 2019.
