A 24-year old man, Hassan Kabiru, leader of thugs at Magbon Alade and Igando Orudu Area of Ibeju Lekki, Lagos has been sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment for leading 19 thugs to attack an Alfa in charge Central Mosque in the area, Olarenwaju Azeez and other worshippers inside the mosque during prayer time with dangerous weapons.
The thugs, armed with broken bottle, sticks and cutlasses inflicted grievous injuries on their eyes and head.
Also injured was one Ibrahim Moshudi.
The convict was jailed by Magistrate K.O. Doja Ojo at the Igbosere Magistrate Court, Lagos after she found him guilty of the four-count charge of felony to wit, conduct likely to cause breach of peace and assault occasioning bodily harm and others preferred against him by the police at the Akodo Division, Ibeju-Lekki during the trial spanning six months.
Police said trouble started for the convict on 31 January, 2017 when he led about 19 thugs to the central mosque to attack Azeez and other worshippers with weapons for unjustifiable reason and escaped.
Concerned residents were said to have pursued the convict, caught him and dragged him to the police station while others escaped.
Kabiru was charged before an Igbosere Magistrate Court on a four-count charge of attacking Azeez and other worshippers inside the mosque with weapons and injured them.
Police counsel, Abiodun Edward said the offences committed were punishable under Section 409, 56(b), 171 and 244(a) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
Magistrate Ojo found the convict guilty in all the four-count change and subsequently sentenced him to 10 years imprisonment without an option of fine with a directive that the sentence would run concurrently.
