Two excellent extra-time goals gave Atletico Madrid victory over Real Madrid in the first ever Uefa Super Cup derby in Estonia.

Koke slotted in Vitolo’s pass minutes after Saul had sensationally volleyed home from 16 yards.

Diego Costa had scored twice in normal time, equalising late in the second half to send the tie to extra time.

His first came within a minute of kick-off as he thumped it high into the net from a tight angle.

Juanfran, who handled the ball in the area to concede a penalty midway through the second half, combined with substitute Angel Correa to set up Costa’s second goal.

Real captain Sergio Ramos slotted home the penalty after team-mate Gareth Bale had set-up Karim Benzema with a header at the back post in the first half.

Full-back Marcelo squandered an excellent chance to score the winner with an overhead kick in the final seconds of normal time but Saul made no mistake when he connected with the ball in extra time.

Back-to-back-to-back Champions League winners Real were looking to become the first side to win three Super Cups in successive seasons but Atletico remain unbeaten in their three appearances.

According to BBC, it was the fourth time in the past five years that the Super Cup was contested by two Spanish sides – but the first with both teams from the same city.

Real were also playing their first competitive game without Cristiano Ronaldo, after the five-time Ballon d’Or winner moved to Juventus for £99m in the summer, and it was manager Julen Lopetegui’s first game in charge since replacing Zinedine Zidane as manager.
