Trader defrauds woman of N366,000 local gin

A 37-year-old trader, Dehinde Iremofe, was on Wednesday appeared in an Okitipupa Magistrates’ Court in Ondo State charged with N366,000 fraud.

The accused, whose address is unknown, is standing trial on a two-count charge of advance fee fraud (419) and conversion of people’s property to his own.

The Prosecutor, Police Insp. Zedekiah Orogbemi told the court that the accused had on July 2 at 10.00 a.m. at a farmland along Okitipupa-Igbokoda Road collected six drums of local gin valued at N366,000 from the complainant, Kemi Anjorin, with a promise to pay back after sales.

The offences violated Sections 383 and 419 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ondo State 2006.

The accused denied the charge and was granted bail in the sum of N300,000 with a surety in like sum.

Magistrate Banji Ayeomoni, who gave the ruling, said the surety, who must be a resident of Okitipupa, should also present evidence of a year tax payment.

In addition, he said the surety should have a landed property within the court’s jurisdiction.

Further hearing has been fixed for Aug. 27.
