Chevron Nigeria Limited, CNL, has contributed over N20.6bn to the Regional Development Committees (RDCs), that represent the over 400 communities in its areas of operations, in the last 13 years.

This assertion was made by the company’s General Manager, Policy, Government and Public Affairs, Mr. Esimaje Brikinn, in his welcome address during the Chevron-sponsored Advanced Writing And Reporting Skills (AWAReS), 2018 programme holding at the School of Media and Communication, Pan Atlantic University, Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos.

According to Brikinn, who was represented by the company’s Manager Communications, Sola Adebawo, CNL was committed to the sustainable development of communities where it operates.

“We also contribute to the sustainable development of communities where we operate. The Global Memorandum of Understanding (GMoU), a community-led participatory partnership model for community engagement and sustainable development was pioneered by CNL in 2005.

“Since inception of the GMoU, CNL has contributed over N20.6 billion to the Regional Development Committees (RDCs), that represent the communities in the areas of our operations to execute hundreds of projects in the communities through a governance model that ensures transparency and accountability,” he said.

Brikinn added that the projects, which cover the areas of education, health, housing, scholarships and economic development; have benefitted over 600,000 people and assisted in enhancing the quality of life in over 400 communities.

He said beside oil exploration, CNL was the highest contributor of high quality domestic gas in Nigeria, adding that since 2015, CNL had supplied 41 per cent of Nigeria’s domestic gas and, had, in fact, reduced routine gas flaring by 90 per cent from 2008 to 2017.

“Besides oil exploration, CNL is the highest contributor of high quality domestic gas in Nigeria. Since 2015, CNL supplies 41 per cent of Nigeria’s domestic gas and is committed to continuing to retain this position. Through investments in gathering and processing of associated gas, routine flaring has been reduced by over 90 per cent from 2008 to 2017 in CNL’s operations.”

The GM stated that CNL recognised that the success of the larger society invariably translates to success in the company’s business. He added that CNL’s long term interest was to add value to society as the company creates value for its stakeholders.

He stressed that Chevron had sponsored the AWAReS programme in the last five years because the organisation strongly believed in the value derivable from developing human capital, in line with its vision to be the global energy company most admired for its people, partnership and performance.

Brikinn appealed to the AWAReS 2018 participants to be guided by truth, accuracy, fairness and balance in telling their narrative. He concluded by saying they should see their participation as an opportunity to learn, unlearn and relearn the skill and ethical principles of, according to him, the great profession of journalism during the programme.
