The Lagos State Government has arrested and paraded two officers of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) for act of misconduct.

The government, therefore, charged other offiers to maintain discipline as well as integrity in carrying out their duties as they are ambassadors of the Lagos State Government.

Commissioner for the Environment, Mr. Babatunde Durosinmi- Etti, paraded the two officers in Ikeja on Wednesday after they were caught for misconduct.

The Officers, Oduyomi Oluwakemi with oracle number 193886 and Ofoesuwa Oluwayemi with oracle number 194375 were caught in the Apapa area of the State while conspiring and encouraging street traders in the area to display their goods illegally on the road median.

Restating the state government’s policy of zero tolerance on street trading, display of goods on road medians and hawking, the Environment Commissioner frowned at the actions of the officers and vowed that they would be dealt with according to the Environmental Laws of the State to serve as deterrence to other officers.

Durosinmi-Etti affirmed that the State Government had given the LAGESC officials the mandate to effectively clamp down on all violators of the Environmental Laws.

According to him, it was disheartening to discover that some officers still indulged in manipulating and contravening these laws.

His words: “it is regrettable that some officers, even after thorough training on how to go about the discharge of their duties, have decided to disregard their training and flout laid down rules and regulations”.

He warned that his ministry was ever determined to implement government’s policy of attaining cleaner, healthier and sustainable environment that would be in tandem with the Lagos State goal of a smart city.

The Commissioner reiterated that government had committed resources on environmental regeneration to improve the aesthetics of the state, regretting however, that street traders and hawkers had been found to be mainly responsible for vandalising and defacing the Environment.

He urged all officers of Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) as well as officers in the environment sector to adhere strictly to the code of conduct of the public service, stressing that government would not hesitate to prosecute anyone found contravening the laws of the State.

He called on Lagosians to be wary of overzealous officers or those with dubious intentions, adding that the people should endeavor to report such characters to the Ministry promptly.
