Two suspected political thugs — Ismaila Oyeleke and Fasasi Elegbeleye — who allegedly beat two members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) black and blue, were on Monday hauled up before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court.
The accused — Oyeleke, 42, and Elegbeleye, 40 — who reside at Adeniji Adele Road, Isale Eko, Lagos Island, are facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and assault occasioning harm.
The Prosecutor, Police Insp. Benson Emuerhi alleged that the accused and others now at large, committed the offences on May 5 at 11.00 a.m. at Dr Teslim Balogun Primary School, Lagos Island.
Emuerhi said accused assaulted a woman, Alhaja Wuraola Williams popularly known as Iron Lady by slapping her and causing her grievous harm.
He also said that the accused assaulted another woman, Onikoyi Kafilat by beating her with a plank, causing her bodily harm.
“Trouble started when the accused asked the complainants and their group “Igbalaani” to walk out while the APC congress was going on.
“He alleged that the accused and one Mr Ismaila Oyeleke a.k.a Bawaala and five men of the Nigerian Army, while armed with rifles and planks, descended on the complainants and their group.
“They beat them with planks and butts of guns, and in the process, they sustained serious injuries,” the prosecutor told the court.
Emuerhi said the accused were apprehended by the police for questioning.
The offences contravened Sections 173 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that both sections stipulate three years imprisonment for offenders.
The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge.
In her ruling, the Chief Magistrate, Mrs O. Sule Amzat, granted the accused bail in the sum of N50, 000 each with two sureties each in like sum.
Amzat said the sureties should be gainfully employed with an evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
In addition, the sureties must be blood relations of the accused.
Amzat adjourned the case until July 30.
