The Federal Government has commenced the construction of a 100-bed clinic for women and children in Benue under the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) programme.
The foundation for the project was laid on Thursday by Gov. Samuel Ortom in Makurdi.
Before now, the federal government had under the SDGs built 42 primary healthcare centres, equipped and donated them to the state government.
Ortom described the partnership between the state and federal government in the implementation of the SDGs as very fruitful.
“It is yielding bountiful results,” he said at the event, adding that the state had also benefited from two skills acquisition centres built by the SDGs in Ado and Guma Local Government Areas.
”SDGs have built Orange plant in Ushongo and Gboko LGAs and Garri factories in Agatu and Ohimini LGAs of the state.
”It has also donated six referral vehicles to six local government areas of the state for conveying pregnant women to places where they can receive medical attention,” the governor added.
Dr Magdalene Dura, Special Adviser to the governor on SDGs, commended the federal government for its intervention, adding that the SDGs had built 42 primary healthcare centres, equipped and donated them to the state.
She also said that it had dug several boreholes for communities including Internally Displaced Persons camps.
The Commissioner for Health, Dr Cecilia Ojabo, represented by the Director, Public Health, Dr Terna Kur said that the ministry would ensure that all the necessary services were provided in the clinic for the benefit of the people.
A member of the host community, Mr Gwaza Ujamatyu, appealed to the governor to construct the road linking the clinic from Aper Aku stadium to NUJ secretariat to ease movement of patients.
