As part of efforts to industrialise Akwa Ibom state, Governor Udom Emmanuel commissioned a 1 x 60MVA, 132kV/33kV transformer to increase the power supply in Uyo from 96megawatts (mw) to 144mw.

Gov. Emmanuel said industrialization is not achievable without steady and quality power supply stating that the project is a collaboration between Akwa Ibom State Government and the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).

Speaking on the development, the Managing Director of Ibom Power Company Limited and Special Assistant on Power to Governor Udom Emmanuel, Engr. Meyen Etukudo said the additional 60MVA transformer will meet the growing power demand in Uyo and other parts of the state.

Engr. Etukudo said the growing power demand in these areas prompted the substation upgrade from 2 x 60MVA, 132/33kV to 3 x 60MVA, 132/33kV which has increased the substation capacity from 120MVA to 180MVA making 144mw of power available for distribution in Uyo.

He further added that the Akwa Ibom state Government is also collaborating with TCN on another 2 X 60MVA, 132/33KV substation project at Ekim in Mkpat Enim Local Government Area which will power five other local governments in the state – Onna, Oruk Anam, Mkpat Enim, Ikot Abasi and Eastern Obolo.
