Man sentenced to 7 years imprisonment for culpable homicide

An FCT High Court in Apo, on Tuesday sentenced Cyril Umunnakwe, a civil servant, to seven years imprisonment for causing the death of one Ochefu Chris.

Justice Idris Baba also ordered the convict to pay N3 million to the family of the deceased.

Idris, declared the defendant guilty of the offence of culpable homicide not punishable with death and convicted him in Jan. 31, 2018, but withheld the sentence.

“I have also considered that the defendant is a first time offender and the breadwinner of his family,” the Judge said.

Umunnakwe, 56 of Lanto Road, Pasali, Kuje was arraigned on May 3, 2016 on a two count charge bordering on culpable homicide punishable with death.

The prosecutor, Doris Okoroba had told the court that the defendant committed the offence on March 23, 2016.

According to Okoroba the defendant knocked down and dragged Deputy Road Commander, Ochefu Chris while on duty.

Idris, held that the prosecutor had proved his case beyond reasonable doubt as there were eyewitness testimony to support the case.

He thereafter sentenced Umunnakwe to seven years imprisonment starting from the day he was remanded.
