A police inspector and two others have been reported killed in a clash between a cult group, Aiye Confraternity and members of the Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC) in Ijebu Igbo, Ijebu North Local Government Area of the state.
The police inspector and an injured policeman, whose names were withheld by the police authorities, were allegedly ambushed by some hoodlums in the same town early Monday morning while on a routine patrol.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Abimbola Oyeyemi, said the policemen were in the town to maintain law and order following the clash which occurred on Sunday before their patrol vehicle was ambushed.
Oyeyemi confirmed that a police inspector was shot dead while another policeman was injured in the ambush.
He also confirmed that two persons who were members of the two groups lost their lives during the clash that happened on Sunday.
The police spokesman said some arrests have been made but failed to disclose the number.
“Some members of the OPC and Aiye cult group clashed on Sunday. One OPC member was shot dead and one member of Aiye cult group was also shot dead.
“This morning, while our men were on routine patrol, they were ambushed by suspected hoodlums. They shot dead one Police Inspector and another one was seriously injured.
“The injured policeman is recuperating in a hospital,” he stated.
Oyeyemi disclosed further that the command had deployed operatives of FSARS, Police Mobile Force and Anti-Cultism Unit to the troubled zone .
He assured that the culprits would be brought to justice, adding that some arrests had been made. ”Culprits responsible for the death of the police inspector will not escape, they will be hunted down whereever they are.
“Some arrests have been made. Presently, I don’t have the number. Normalcy has returned to the town,” he added.
