Lagos rescues 51 children, destitute, beggars from Lagos Streets

The Lagos State Government has rescued 51 children, destitute and beggars from the streets of Lagos.

The rescue of the destitute, is under the recently launched ‘Operation Clear Lagos’, specifically constituted to address the menace of street begging, rehabilitate destitute and mentally challenged persons.

‘Operation Clear Lagos’ as directed by the State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode consists of the Rescue Team of the Lagos State Ministry of Youth and Social Development with the mandate of ensuring that children and vulnerable members of the public were not exposed to any form of security threats.

The operation, which kicked off at the weekend across all 20 Local Governments and 37 Local Council Development Areas of the State led to the rescue of 10 mentally challenged persons, five children destitute, eight children beggars, nine children labour workers, four adult destitute and 15 transgender adult beggars.

Commenting on the operation of the team, the Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Agboola Dabiri said in order to achieve the desired goal of a total clean up of all acts constituting public nuisances and threat to social security, there was the need for residents of the State to cooperate with government to end street begging and other unacceptable practices of a mega city status.

The children rescued during the operation have been taken to a rehabilitation and correctional homes in the State based on specifications of age, gender and physical challenges.
