NEMA, FRSC to ensure safety of motorists

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), has flagged-off a collaborative operation with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Red Cross Society and other critical stakeholders in disaster management.

Flagging-off the operation on Thursday in Sokoto, the State’s Head of Operation, NEMA, Mr Suleiman Muhammad, said that the collaboration would last to the middle of January is  2018.

“This is in an effort to curtail the escalating road traffic accidents especially during the festive period, to ensure safety of motorist in Sokoto state in particular and the country in general.

“NEMA is committed to managing all kinds of disasters across the country and road accident being the most effected disaster in Nigeria, needs to be fully addressed.

“As such, we are today collaborating with FRSC, Red Cross and other stakeholders to ensure full management of road accident, most especially the end of the year celebration, where more people travel across the country by road.

“Our officers will be in strategic places on these roads to monitor and reduce reckless driving; we also urge drivers to be moderate on their speed limit and to avoid any intoxicant behavior,” Muhammad said.

In his remarks, Mr Yusuf Haruna, Deputy Corps Commander, FRSC Sokoto Command, commended NEMA for the support given to the commission’s operation in the state.

“NEMA and FRSC are working toward ensuring safety of the people in the country, as such, the collaboration will enable our collective responsibility to succeed,” he said.

He advised motorists to always avoid overloading and high speed to ensure the safety of their movement throughout the period of the New Year celebrations and beyond.
