Bayo Onanuga, the Managing Director of News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), on Thursday promised more support for the agency’s sports teams in subsequent competitions after they won three trophies this week.

Onanuga made the promise in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja after their wonderful performance in the 2017 FCT SWAN Week Sports Competitions for media organisations.

NAN reports that two competitions were held in major events —- five-a-side football and table tennis —- by staff of media organisations in the FCT during the week-long activity.

After winning the top two prizes in table tennis male and female, NAN could only finish as runners-up in the five-a-side football final match which Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) won 2-1.

However, Onanuga said there was the need for the agency to redouble its efforts in order to win all events, especially football, in subsequent competitions.

“In spite of everything, we are impressed and I am satisfied with what our teams have been able to do in this competition. I salute the players and officials.

“Our loss today, which is our first in the competition, is a lesson to us, and we will redouble our efforts, so that we will sweep all the honours next time around.

“However, I must say also that this will move us to give more support to our teams in subsequent editions of the competition,’’ he said.

The NAN Managing Director also commended the organisers of the agency’s team for doing a great job.

Speaking also, the NAN Teams’ Coordinator, Olawale Alabi, said he was impressed with his players’ performance and the results achieved.

“We started this like a small joke, and when we got going, there was no stopping us until today. But we thank God for all we have.

“We won gold in two of the three competitions and silver in all the three competitions. It means we were in all the three competitions, winning three trophies. So, what else could we have asked for?

“But I can assure all that, with more support from our management as our MD has promised, there will be nothing to stop us next year,’’ he said.

NAN reports that the competitions which started on Nov. 16 came to an end on Thursday.
