Housemaid Jailed 4-year For Stealing Employer's N22m Jewelries

A 21-year old housemaid, Patience Anyen has been sentenced to four years of imprisonment for stealing her employer’s jewelries valued at N22 million.

The convict was jailed by Magistrate O.M Ajayi in charge of Court 14 at the Igbosere Magistrate Court, Lagos Island after she found the convict guilty of the two-charge of conspiracy and stealing preferred against her by the Police at the Maroko Division, Lekki, Lagos during the trial spanning a year and eight months.

Police alleged that trouble started for the convict on 12 March, 2016 when her
employer, Mrs Folashade Ilori reported to the Police that she left her maid at home at her residence at 31b, Shakiru Anjorin Street, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos for work, but that when she returned, she could not find her maid and her box containing jewelries valued at N22m.

Police alleged that following the report, the Divisional Police Officer, DPO in charge of Maroko Division,SP Isah Abdulmajid directed a team led by Inspector Omogiate Eduzola to fish out the maid.

Following the directive, the Police team swung into action and after days of intelligence gathering and tracking, detectives arrested the maid at a hideout in Lagos and took her to the Station.

The maid was arraigned before an Igbosere Magistrate Court on a two-count charge of stealing.

Police Prosecutor, Tubi Olajide said the offences the accused committed were punishable under sections 409 and 285 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State,2011.

In her testimony during her trial while being cross examined by Olajide, the convict confessed to the court that she stole her madam’s jewelries and handed them over to two unidentified men to sell and used the money to buy chemical to wash the millions of Naira they promise to share with her.

Magistrate Ajayi sentenced Anyen to four years imprisonment without an option of fine with a directive that the sentence would run concurrently.
