$3.5m needed for DRC asylum seekers in Zambia - UNHCR

The United Nations Refugee Agency Zambia office, on Monday said it required about 3.5 million dollars to manage the influx of refugees from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) in northern parts of Zambia.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said the cost of managing the influx of DRC asylum seekers was likely to increase because of the continuous arrival of people.

A local media reported that Kelvin Shimoh, the communications manager said the funds that have been made available were not adequate to manage the crisis.

He said the country, has so far received over 6,000 asylum seekers from the DRC since January, with August recording the highest number of arrivals.

The asylum seekers were being kept at a housing centre in Nchelenge district where they are being provided with basic necessities
