The National Youth Council of Nigeria says it has constituted a directorate to facilitate youths’ active participation in politics with a view to strengthen the unity of the country.

Mr Murtala Muhammed-Garba, the president of the council, announced this in a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja after the inauguration of the directorate.

He observed that the directorate — Political and Democratic Matters — would address the perceived inadequacy, marginalisation of the youth and their poor participation in governance.

Signed by Mr Obinna Nwaka, Director, Political and Democratic Matters of the council, the statement quoted the council as observing that the youth indulged in divisive statement, immorality and antagonism, among other vices due to bad influence emulated from the elderly.

“We wish to pledge our total commitment to the peace and unity of this great indivisible country and we seek for more support for the youth empowerment in governance.

“Our duty is to carry the youth along in our scheme of programme, reposition the mindset of youths and reawaken their consciousness on political issues,’’ the council noted.

Also, the statement quoted Mr Oscar Kalu, a member of the directorate as saying that youths across the country were more than 120 million who should be given a chance of expressing their readiness to participate in governance for national development.
