The operatives of the Lagos State Task Force have impounded six vehicles and 68 motorcycles (okadas) for driving and riding against traffic (one-way) on Apongbon Bridge on Lagos Island, Lagos, Southwest Nigeria.
SP Olayinka Egbeyemi, Chairman of the Lagos State Task Force who led the enforcement, disclosed that the six vehicles and 68 okadas were impounded for driving and riding against the flow of traffic, an offence under the Lagos State Road Traffic Laws of 2012.
He said he was surprised that motorists and motorcyclists could be driving and riding against traffic on the long Apongbon Bridge without any fear of imminent collusion with on-coming vehicles.
Egbeyemi stated that all illegal commercial motorists and traders operating under the bridge at Apongbon, including those collecting illegal fees must vacate immediately.
He said further that the present government was working round the clock at ensuring adequate security and free-flow of traffic around all bridges across the state.
The chairman warned all illegal commercial bus operators, traders, mechanics, miscreants and hoodlums to immediately vacate under Apongbon Bridge as anyone arrested by the agency after this warning would be prosecuted.
“We are issuing a final warning to all those concerned, including touts with uniform collecting fees from motorists and traders under the Apongbon Bridge to vacate immediately,” he warned.
Egbeyemi said Governor Akinwunmi Ambode was investing huge amount of money in constructing bus terminal across the State for the benefit of every members of the public.
He said the on-going construction of BRT Corridor from Abule-Egba to Oshodi by the present administration was meant to decongest gridlock around that axis.
The chairman, however, confirmed that after briefing the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Edgar Imohimi about the enforcement operations carried around Apongbon, he directed that all drivers and riders arrested be charge to court immediately.
