Student charged with attempt to abort girlfriend’s pregnancy

A 24-year-old student, Fashina Toyin, who allegedly inserted abortion drug in her girlfriend’s private part to terminate her early pregnancy, on Thursday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

Toyin, who resides in Alagbado, a suburb of Lagos, is facing a charge of attempt to procure abortion.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty, but the Prosecutor, Insp. Victor Eruada, insisted that the accused committed the offence on Sept. 1 at Kola Akera Junction, Alagbado, Lagos.

He alleged that the accused, who the boyfriend of the complainant, Makinde Blessing, had administered the abortion drug when she told him that she was pregnant.

“Toyin inserted the abortion drug in Blessing’s private part in order to terminate the pregnancy.

“Some days after, she started bleeding profusely and when she alerted people about her condition, they came and rushed her to the hospital,” he told the court.

The offence contravened Section 145 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that attempt to procure abortion carries a penalty of seven years imprisonment

The Magistrate, Mrs G.O. Anifowoshe, granted bail to the accused in the sum of N150, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

She adjourned the case until Oct. 18 for mention.
